A University of Leeds web site designed to help all students understand what mental health is and what they can do if they have mental health difficulties. Most students will have experiences causing stress, upsetting the mental health balance sometime in their university career. It could be relationship problems, sexuality, exams, leaving home – anything. In this website there are scenarios that look at the kinds of experience people may have.

Childline

Childline is a service provided by NSPCC. The site has information on a whole range of issues. Childline encourages children who have a worry they can’t cope with, to not bottle it up but to talk to someone in their family, a carer, one of their friends or maybe a teacher. And they are encouraged to call ChildLine on 0800 1111 at any time.

Depression in teenagers – Young People’s Unit, Edinburgh

A web site providing general information about depression in young people. It is intended that it be used as a resource to help users to recognise the symptoms associated with the condition as well as offering some suggestions about ways to combat these symptoms.

Helping Hands

The Muslim Youth Helpline

The Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH) is a registered charity which provides pioneering faith and culturally sensitive services to Muslim youth in the UK. The core service is a free and confidential counselling service available nationally via the telephone, email, internet. The service uses male and female volunteers trained in basic counselling skills to respond to client enquiries. MYH also runs an interactive peer support site, www.muslimyouth.net.

Student Mental Health

A NHS Choices ‘Live Well’ web page on student mental health. The page has: useful links; a list of popular topics; a search facility for services near to you; a five-a-day shopping planner; the main mental health problems affecting students and getting help.

The Surgery

The Surgery is a joint project between BBC Switch and Radio 1. The Surgery with Aled opens for business on Sundays, 9.00 pm to 10.00 pm on Radio 1. It provides advice and information for teenagers about personal issues. If young people need advice outside these hours they can call 0800 1 10 100 or visit the advice pages on the above link.

YoungMinds

YoungMinds is a national charity committed to improving the mental health and emotional well-being of all children and young people.

Youth2Youth

Youth2Youth, the UK’s first national young person’s helpline, is run by young people, for young people. The confidential helpline is for any young person under the age of 19 years who feel they need emotional support. Young people who are worried, confused or just need to talk can contact the trained volunteers by telephone, email or on-line chat.

YouthHealthTalk

YouthHealthTalk is a web site about young people’s real life experiences of health and lifestyle. This is not just a web site about the medical facts, this is about real people and real lives. Watch, listen and read young people talking about their experiences, and feel free to join in the forums. The Health Experience Research Group at Oxford University has created a unique database of personal and patient experiences through in-depth qualitative research into over 40 different illnesses and health conditions. The results of the research are published on two web sites – this one and www.healthtalkonline.org, which are aimed at patients, their carers, family and friends, doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

Youthinmind

Youthinmind Ltd is a private family-run company harnessing computers and the Internet for the psychological well-being of people everywhere. Far more young people and families want psychological advice than can get it from trained professionals – this web sites exists to help fill this gap.
